THE NEW VIKING 80

Viking has led the charge in the design, development and production of the biggest convertible sportfishing yachts for more than 20 years and the newest Viking to proudly join the fleet is the 80 Convertible.

Unveiled at the Dealer Meeting earlier this month, the 80 Convertible hones its blue-water DNA from its stable mates. The sleek styling showcases an impeccable sheer line with nine feet of freeboard forward tapering to slightly more than three feet at the stern, a lively reflection of the aggressive profiles of its recent brethren including the 92 and 62 Convertibles. The hull’s sharper entry merges with a higher forward chine designed to divert spray downward when ripping through head seas. Convex hull sections add curvature and form to the refined running surface, while a quad of molded running strakes accentuate lateral tracking and maneuverability. Deadrise at the transom is 12.5 degrees and the beam is carried well aft providing exceptional volume, buoyancy and balance, a deft combination, which comfortably accommodates additional fuel, and the weight of a gyro stabilizer. Powered with tier 3 MTU Series 2000 V16 M96L engines each developing 2,635 mhp with Blue Vision controls and display monitors, our tank testing calculations indicate a top speed in excess of 40 knots with an effortless high 30 knot cruise.

Inviting accommodations include five generously appointed staterooms, including a full beam master suite with a king size walk-around bed. The port and forward staterooms have walk-around queen beds. Two starboard staterooms have upper and lower berths, and are spacious due to the use of sliding entrance doors which maximize interior space. Every stateroom has a large head and fiberglass shower stall.

See her at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show November 5 thru 9, 2015.

New Viking 66 rough footage of dealer sea trials

Footage was shot from the Viking 50 Convertible "ZF Boat", powered by C18 Caterpillars combined with ZF 4000 pod drive propulsion system.  The Viking in the foreground is a 42 Open with 600HP Cummins/Zeus pods. The 66 hit over 40kts at WOT, with a surprising 30kt average at only 1800 rpm with the MTU 16V Series 2000 M91 engines, rated at 2030MHP each.  The new 66 Convertible will be unveiled to the public at the 2011 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.  Pre-register with HMY at http://bit.ly/ivNkkC.

The new Viking 66 Convertible

We just returned from the annual Viking Dealer Meeting in New Gretna, NJ where we had Tuesday afternoon to spend onboard, reviewing the layout and features.  View of the bow shows the 8' plus freeboard forward.

Like her larger siblings, the 66 cockpit offers comfortable mezzanine seating for observing the action in the cockpit without getting in the way.  Large freezer compartments under the seating allow for extended cruising capability or bait storage. Cockpit sole and transom fishbox livewells are available, and large sole dunnage and fish boxes are standard.  Flybridge seating includes three helm seats, port and starboard bench seating, and forward console seat.

Forward on the bridge is a large freezer, as standard equipment.  Fresh water faucet and sink are to port, with matching drink box to starboard. Excellent storage capability under bench and console seats.

Spacious and comfortable interior layout with four staterooms standard.  Master stateroom to port features athwart berth with large hanging lockers, plenty of drawer storage, and ensuite head. VIP forward is available with island queen berth or crossover bunks. Starboard stateroom has over and under bunks, and like the forward stateroom has its own head and stall shower.  Crew stateroom is aft to starboard and is equally elegant, with roomy bunks and spacious head and shower. An engine room access door allows alternate entry for the crew from the cockpit.  There are too many salon, dinette, and galley features to review now, but I should point out the popular, optional day head, conveniently located just inside the electrically operated salon door.
